About Me:
Even though some of neil postman books Postman's predictions were impressive, his outlook on the future - watchful, considerate, and compassionate - is what makes him enduring. He provided an example of how to deal with change without rejecting it or accepting it without question, but rather by approaching it with historical awareness, ethical contemplation, and a strong dedication to what makes us uniquely human: our ability to be amazed, communicate, and correct ourselves. To amuse oneself or others has always been the definition of entertainment.
To understand Postman, it's important to consider two different meanings of the word "entertainment". Amusing Ourselves to Death, Postman's first published book, is a masterwork of media criticism. Though we have forgotten this distinction, entertainment is typically the latter of the two in contemporary American society. We've mixed up what we go to see with what we do. It can also refer to a location that provides entertainment or amusement. It examines how entertainment has slowly overtaken serious communication in the form of television, movies, and even books.
In order to undermine a person's self-awareness, autonomy, and critical thinking, brainwashing uses coercion to repeatedly inundate them with propaganda, misleading information, or psychological manipulation. These coercive techniques can include blackmail, physical and sexual abuse, fear, and indoctrination. What is an example of brainwashing? Brainwashing is any attempt to control a person's thoughts or behaviors through coercive methods, such as physical, psychological, or emotional abuse.
The objective is to convince the victim that their captor or cult leader is more knowledgeable about what is best for them than they are. And as Neil Postman notes, there have been numerous changes to our language, culture, and perspective on the world, so this is not wholly new. As a result, we are continuously exposed to information, sound bites, and visual images that are meant to amuse us and provide us with more things to laugh about. With Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, visuals gained importance once more.
There are fewer sources of knowledge and fewer opportunities for people to engage with each other on ideas they care about. Therefore, I think Postman would have appreciated the internet as well, but he would have cautioned us about its risks. Why is brainwashing so harmful? This kind of persuasion is intended to be so strong that the affected individuals accept the ideas, facts, or beliefs that they might otherwise reject. Brainwashing is a type of psychological manipulation that aims to convince an individual or a group of individuals to accept a belief as fact or to embrace a particular message as truth.
